History of Boxing

Early History

Fist fighting was found in Sumerian relief carvings in the 3rd millennium BC, while an ancient Egyptian relief carvings from the 2nd millenium BC depicts both boxers and spectators. Both depictions show bare-fisted contests. In 1927 Dr. E. A. Speiser, an archaeologist, discovered a Mesopotamian stone tablet in Baghdad, Iraq depicting two men getting ready for a prize fight. The tablet is believed to be 7,000 years old. Fist-fighting or boxing is also described in several ancient Indian texts such as the Vedas, Ramayana and Mahabharata. Evidence was also found in excavations at the Indus Valley cities of Mohenjadaro and Harappa. The earliest evidence for fist fighting with a kind of gloves can be found on Minoan Crete (circa (c.) 1500-900 BC), and on Sardinia, if we consider the boxing statues of Prama mountains (c. 2000-1000 BC).

Ancient Greek Boxing

The lebo and the Etruscans called boxing pugilism (a term now synonymous with boxing). The Greeks and Etruscans were not the first to give rules to the sport, if we consider Mediterranean peoples who preceded them, such as the Shardana and the Egyptians. In the Mediterranean area while clinching was strictly forbidden, there were (unlike in modern boxing) no weight classes. Fights were not separated into rounds and had no time limit. They ended at a knockout, or at a fighter abandoning the fight, or sometimes at the death of one of the fighters. Although gloves were used in practice, in competition fighters wrapped their hands in strips of hardened leather which protected the fist and caused unpleasant injuries for the opponent.

Homer's Iliad (ca. 675 BC) contains the first detailed account of a boxing fight (Book XXIII). According to the Iliad, Mycenaean warriors included boxing among their competitions honoring the fallen, though it is possible that the Homeric epics reflect later culture. Another legend holds that the heroic ruler Theseus, said to have lived around the 9th century BC, invented a form of boxing in which two men sat face to face and beat each other with their fists until one of them was killed. In time, the boxers began to fight while standing and wearing gloves (with spikes) and wrappings on their arms below the elbows, although otherwise they competed naked.

Boxing was first accepted as an Olympic sport in 688 BC, being called Pygme or Pygmachia. Participants trained on punching bags (called a korykos). Fighters wore leather straps (called himantes) over their hands, wrists, and sometimes breast, to protect them from injury. The straps left their fingers free. Legend had it that the Spartans were the first to box as a way to prepare for sword and shield fighting.

Ancient Roman Boxing

In ancient Rome, there were two forms of boxing both coming from Etruscan boxing. The athletic form of boxing remained popular throughout the Roman world. The other form of boxing was gladiatorial. Fighters were usually criminals and slaves who hoped to become champions and gain their freedom; however, free men, women, and even aristocrats also fought. Eventually, fist fighting became so popular that even emperors started fighting, and the practice was promoted by Caesar Neronis. A fight between the agile Dares and the towering Entellus is described at length in the Roman national epic Aeneid (1st century BC).

In 393 A.D., the Olympics were banned by the Christian emperor Theodosius, and in 500 A.D., boxing was banned altogether by Theodoric the Great as being an insult to God because it disfigures the face, the image of God. However, this edict had little effect outside the major cities of the Eastern Empire. By this time, western Europe was no longer part of the Roman Empire. Boxing remained popular in Europe throughout the Middle Ages and beyond. It should be noted that wrestling, fencing and racing (both chariot and foot) were never banned by the late Romans, as they did not cause disfigurement.

Modern Boxing

London Prize Ring Rules (1743)

Records of Classical boxing activity disappeared after the fall of the Roman Empire. However, there are detailed records of various fist-fighting sports that were maintained in different cities and provinces of Italy between the 12th and 17th centuries. There was also a sport in ancient Rus called Fistfight. The sport would later resurface in England during the early 18th century in the form of bare-knuckle boxing sometimes referred to as prizefighting. The first documented account of a bare-knuckle fight in England appeared in 1681 in the London Protestant Mercury, and the first English bare-knuckle champion was James Figg in 1719. This is also the time when the word "boxing" first came to be used.

Early fighting had no written rules. There were no weight divisions or round limits, and no referee. In general, it was very chaotic. The first boxing rules, called the London Prize Ring rules, were introduced by heavyweight champion Jack Broughton in 1743 to protect fighters in the ring where deaths sometimes occurred. Under these rules, if a man went down and could not continue after a count of 30 seconds, the fight was over. Hitting a downed fighter and grasping below the waist were prohibited. Broughton also invented and encouraged the use of "mufflers", a form of padded gloves, which were used in training and exhibitions. The first 'boxing paper' was published in the late 18th century by successful Birmingham boxer 'William Futrell' who remained undefeated until his one hour and seventeen minute fight at Smitham Bottom, Croydon, on July 9, 1788 against a much younger "Gentleman" John Jackson which was attended by the Prince of Wales.

Although bare-knuckle fighting was in almost every aspect far more brutal than modern boxing, it did allow the fighters a single advantage not enjoyed by today's boxers: The London Prize Rules permitted the fighter to drop to one knee to begin a 30-second count at any time. Thus a fighter realizing he was in trouble had an opportunity to recover. Intentionally going down in modern boxing will cause the recovering fighter to lose points in the scoring system.

In 1838, the London Prize Ring rules were expanded in detail. Later revised in 1853, they stipulated the following:

Fights occurred in a 24 feet (7.3 m)-square ring surrounded by ropes.
If a fighter was knocked down, he had to rise within 30 seconds under his own power to be allowed to continue.
Biting, headbutting and hitting below the belt were declared fouls.

Through the late nineteenth century, boxing or prizefighting was primarily a sport of dubious legitimacy. Outlawed in England and much of the United States, prizefights were often held at gambling venues and broken up by police. Brawling and wrestling tactics continued, and riots at prizefights were common occurrences. Still, throughout this period, there arose some notable bare knuckle champions who developed fairly sophisticated fighting tactics.

Marquess of Queensberry Rules (1867)

In 1867, the Marquess of Queensberry rules were drafted by John Chambers for amateur championships held at Lillie Bridge in London for Lightweights, Middleweights and Heavyweights. The rules were published under the patronage of the Marquess of Queensberry, whose name has always been associated with them.

There were twelve rules in all, and they specified that fights should be "a fair stand-up boxing match" in a 24-foot-square ring. Rounds were three minutes long with one minute rest intervals between rounds. Each fighter was given a ten-second count if he was knocked down and wrestling was banned.

The introduction of gloves of "fair-size" also changed the nature of the bouts. An average pair of boxing gloves resembles a bloated pair of mittens and are laced up around the wrists. The gloves can be used to block an opponent's blows. As a result of their introduction, bouts became longer and more strategic with greater importance attached to defensive maneuvers such as slipping, bobbing, countering and angling. Because less defensive emphasis was placed on the use of the forearms and more on the gloves, the classical forearms outwards, torso leaning back stance of the bare knuckle boxer was modified to more modern stance in which the torso is tilted forward and the hands are held closer to the face.

The English case of R. V. Coney in 1882 found that a bare-knuckle fight was an assault occasioning actual bodily harm, despite the consent of the participants. This marked the end of widespread public bare-knuckle contests in England.

The first world heavyweight champion under the Queensberry Rules was "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, who defeated John L. Sullivan in 1892 at the Pelican Athletic Club in New Orleans.

Throughout the early twentieth century, boxers struggled to achieve legitimacy, aided by the influence of promoters like Tex Rickard and the popularity of great champions from John L. Sullivan to Jack Dempsey. Shortly after this era, boxing commissions and other sanctioning bodies were established to regulate the sport and establish universally recognized champions.

William "Bogs" Adornado

William "Bogs" Adornado (born on May 26, 1951), a former UST Glowing Goldie in the UAAP, is the first Most Valuable Player (MVP) awardee of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in 1975 while playing for the Crispa Redmanizers. He repeated the feat in 1976, making him the first player to win the award in back-to-back seasons in 1975 and 1976, leading Crispa to its first four PBA titles that includes the team's very first recorded Grand Slam in 1976.

Unfortunately, following Crispa's first Grand Slam, Adornado was sidelined for three years after injuring his knee cap from a contact with U/Tex Weaver's Romeo Frank. The injury almost ended his basketball career but the sweet-shooting 6'1" forward made the most amazing comeback in the league's history when he moved to the U/Tex Wranglers and led the team to a win over the Toyota Tamaraws in the 1980 PBA Open Conference championship that saw U/Tex coming from a four point deficit with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. It was considered as the longest 16 seconds in the PBA history and broke the Crispa-Toyota domination in the league. In 1981, Adornado won his third MVP award to become the first player to win three MVP awards in his career at that time.

In one of his memorable comeback games, Adornado scored 64 points and led U/Tex to a 126-111 demolition of San Miguel. That total was the most scored by any local player at that time.

After his stint with U/Tex, Adornado later joined Great Taste. In 1985, he played for rookie team Shell Azodrin Bugbusters along with former Crispa teammates Philip Cezar and Bernie Fabiosa. Under head coach Freddie Webb, Shell made its first finals appearance in its first season, losing to the Great Taste Coffee Makers.

He converted 69 consecutive free throws from Oct. 14, 1986 while playing for Shell until Aug. 7, 1987 while donning the Hill Bros. Jersey, a record that stood for six years until Allan Caidic broke it with 76 consecutive free shots made.

In 1987, he led the Coffee Kings to the finals losing to the San Miguel Beermen. Adornado's number 33 has been retired by the Alaska franchise and was honored in the opening of the 1988 PBA season.

As a PBA player, Adornado is a three-time PBA Most Valuable Player in 1975, 1976 and 1981, and a member of the PBA 25's Greatest Players of All-time and the PBA Hall of Fame.

Due to his accomplishments, Adornado is considered one of the best Filipino basketball players of all-time. He was a prolific scorer with a deadly outside shot. In an era where shooting coaches were unheard of, Adornado had a picture-perfect textbook jump-shot that was unstoppable especially in clutch situations.

Adornado would later be the yardstick of all great shooting forwards who ever graced the PBA, burning the hoops with one of the deadliest perimeter jumpers the league has ever witnessed. He played a total of 12 seasons, averaging 20.4 points per game.

All in all, Bogs was a member of seven Mythical Team Selections. He led the league in scoring five times and is a member of the 5,000- and 10,000-point clubs, scoring 11,967 points in 586 games during his memorable career.

After retiring as a basketball player, Adornado, eventually, coached for Alaska Milk, and was an assistant coach for the Mobiline Phone Pals and Shell Turbo Chargers in the PBA and the UST Growling Tigers in the UAAP in the past. As an update, his contract as the head coach of the Adamson Falcons in the UAAP after Leo Austria left the team was not renewed after its expiration last December 2008.

In the towns of Cainta and Taytay, both found in the province of Rizal, in the Philippines, the facial features of the natives are noticeably different from the rest of the population. They have deep set eyes, thick eyelashes and eyebrows, high-bridged noses, and dark and hairy skins similar to those of the natives of India. One might ask how they got it.Well, history can explain how they got it.

In 1756, the Seven Year War broke out in Europe between England and Prussia on one side and France, Russia and Austria on the other side. Spain joined the war on the side of France since the kings of both kingdom are blood-related, both descending from the Bourbon family. As a result, England, which was also building up an empire of her own in Asia, decided to invade the Philippines, being a Spanish colony.

On September 22, 1762, a British invasion force prepared by the East India Company based in India arrived in Manila, under the joint command of General William Draper and Admiral Samuel Cornish. The British force included 13 warships and a landing force of nearly 7,000 troops, majority of whom are Sepoys (a native Indian soldier in the British army). After a preliminary bombardment, British troops landed and assaulted Manila. The Spanish forces could not stop the British attack for it so happened that the Philippines has no Governor-General at that time. On October 6, 1762, the Acting Governor-General of the colony, Archbishop Manuel Antonio Rojo, surrendered the city to the invaders.

The British fanned out from Manila to conquer the rest of Luzon. But the Filipinos remained loyal to Spain. Under the inspired leadership of Simon de Anda, a member of the Royal Audiencia who had escaped from Manila to carry on the Spanish resistance and established himself as Governor-General in Bacolor, Pampanga, the Filipinos fought bravely. The British were unable to extend their conquest beyond Manila and the nearby towns and provinces. They were only able to conquer the towns along the Pasig River, particularly the towns of Pasig, Cainta and Taytay.

When the Seven Years War ended in 1763, England returned the Philippines to Spain. Simon de Anda returned to Manila in triumph on May 31, 1764 and accepted the city from the British.

However, the Sepoys at that time were already inter-married to the natives of Cainta and Taytay. And so, when the British troops have to return to India and England after the war, majority of the Sepoys remained in the Philippines because of their family.

The company responsible for the maintenance and preservation of the Las Piñas Bamboo Organ is the Diego Cera Organbuilders, Inc. (DCOB). Spearheaded by Edgar Montiano and Cealwyn Tagle, organ-building experts, DCOB was successfully put up and rightfully tagged as "the FIRST FILIPINO pipe organ-building company". The competence of Mr. Tagle and Mr. Montiano is unquestionable, being products of intensive trainings in "organ-building" in various European communities.

Following the Bamboo Organ’s return home on March 13, 1975 from its restoration in Bonn, Germany, an annual Bamboo Organ Festival was conceptualized to draw the participation of the world’s leading organists, singers and instrumentalists as well as attract both local and international tourists and music enthusiaists. As such, the need to look for Filipinos playing and maintaining the instrument were thought of. Nevertheless, the annual Bamboo Organ Festival was inaugurated on May 9, 1975 with Wolfgang Oehms of Trier, Germany as conductor.

On the second year of the Festival, Wolfgang Oehms organized a workshop for the organists which was repeated in 1979. He then suggested that a second pipe organ shall be needed in the future to play the music that was not suited to the Bamboo Organ if Las Piñas really needs a good organist.

In 1981, when Dr. Johann Trummer, head of the Institute of Church Music in Graz came for the Festival, he noticed the potential of the parish organist, Armando Salarza, and recommended him for the organ and music studies in Austria.

When Armando returned home, after finishing his studies in Austria, the problem of having a pipe organ that could be used to perform music, particularly by Bach, came up again. Dr. Trummer suggested that Helmut Allgauer, an organ builder based in Grunbach, Austria, be commissioned to make a suitable instrument by training and supervising two young Filipinos while building the organ themselves from scratch.

Thus, two young men who were former members of the Las Piñas Boy’s Choir, Cealwyn Tagle and Edgar Montiano, were chosen for the job. Studying as apprentices of organbuilder master Helmut Allgauer in Grunbach, some 40 kms. south of Vienna, Austria, they learned every aspect of the craft for a period of about five years, under the supervision of the master himself.

They also trained under the company of Johannes Klais Orgelbau, restorer of the Bamboo Organ, in Bonn, Germany from May to December, 1991 where they underwent special trainings in making metal pipes, making wind chests, and assembly of organs.They also participated in several workshops handled by the International Society of Organbuilders (ISO) and the European Center for Conservation, Restoration, and Renovation (ECCRR).

During their 5-year apprenticeship (1988-92), they were exposed to a variety of restoration work, and construction of new pipe organs. They assisted Mr. Allgäuer in tuning, maintaining, and repairing the following principal organs in Vienna:

Musikhochschule Wien,

Church of St. Stephan,

Church of St. Augistin,

St. Michael,

St. Ursula, and

Concert organ of ORF (Austrian Radio and Television).

Bonn Munster,

Collegium Albertinum,

Wesseling,

Cathedral of Fulda,

Joy Dionisio, who was playing for Concepcion-Carrier then, made the first shot via layup. However, Mariwasa-Noritake went on to win the game, making it the first team to win in the PBA, 101-98, via the sterling performance of Cisco Oliver, who made 48 points.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is a professional basketball league in the Philippines founded in April 9, 1975 as a "rebellion" of nine teams from the now-defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) which was tightly controlled then by the now-defunct Basketball Association of the Philippines, the then Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) recognized national association. The nine rebel teams mentioned were Crispa, Toyota, U-tex, Tanduay, Presto, Seven-Up, Royal Tru-Orange, Carrier and Noritake.

Considered to be the first and the oldest professional basketball league in Asia and the second oldest in the world after the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the United States, the league's rules are a hybrid of FIBA's and the NBA's rules.

Season Format

From 1975-2003, a season was usually composed of three conferences (tournaments). Beginning the 1993 season, the conferences were named All Filipino, Commissioner's and Governors' Cups, that usually ends in a best-of-7 Finals series match wherein the winner takes the Conference Cup. If the same team wins all of the conferences, the team is said to be the "Grand Slam" champion. The rookie draft then was held every January.

In 2004, then-commissioner Noli Eala introduced drastic changes to the season calendar. He reduced the number of conferences from three to two and changed the start of the season from February to October, so that the league can accommodate international tournaments that were frequently held from June to September. Another reason for the change in schedule was the popularity of college hoops, the NCAA and the UAAP, whose basketball season runs from June to October each year.

In the aforesaid new seaon format, the first tournament is the Philippine Cup, held from October to February the following year and exclusive for local players only, while the second tournament is the Fiesta Conference, held from March to July and teams are allowed to field one foreign player called an "import". The former is identical to the All-Filipino Conference of the previous seasons. Meanwhile, the rookie draft is now held every August.

Rules

The PBA has a hybrid of FIBA and NBA rules:

A game consists of four 12-minute quarters, the NBA standard.
The three-point line's distance is 20 feet, 6 inches, the FIBA standard. The line was previously 22 feet away from the basket.
It remains to be seen if the league will implement the new FIBA rule where the line is now 20 feet, 9 inches from the basket.
The "key" is a trapezoid, the FIBA standard. It was previously the NBA standard rectangular key.
It remains to be seen if the league will implement the new FIBA rule where the key is now the NBA standard rectangular.
Zone defenses are allowed, the FIBA standard, although illegal defense was implemented before.
A team enters the penalty situation after the fifth foul in a quarter, each successive foul thereafter entitles the fouled player two free-throw attempts. However, in the last two minutes of regulation, both teams are only allowed one foul to give considering the team is not yet in penalty. Team fouls and penalty situations carry over in overtime periods whenever applicable.
Newcomers enter the league via a draft.
Only Filipinos are allowed to play, non-Filipinos can play as "imports", and only on certain conferences. Currently the Fiesta Conference limits imports of one per team, with no height limit; two teams with the worst records after the Philippine Cup eliminations receive an import of unlimited height and another with a height limit of 6'1".
The PBA has also other different rules:
The league implements the Trent Tucker Rule.
In the league, there is a foul called an advantage foul, This is called when an a player is fouled by an opposing player while in a fastbreak situation. The opposing player fouls another player without going for the ball. Then the opposing players team will be given two freethrows and will regain the ball.

Teams

All franchises are owned by corporations, and are not based on a geographic locale, therefore they do not play in a "home stadium" and the league per se rents the different stadiums in which the teams play.

A team's name is often divided into three parts; the first is the company name, then the product (can be omitted or merged with the next part), and a nickname - usually connected to the business of the company. For example, the San Miguel Beermen is a team owned by San Miguel Corporation, with the "beermen" nickname denoting the San Miguel Beer product.

The company name rarely changes - it can only change if the franchise is sold or if the mother company transfers the operations of the franchise into another subsidiary. The product name and the nickname often changes, as companies would maximize the publicity the league gives to its products.

Manila Industrial Commercial Athletics Association

The Manila Industrial Commercial Athletics Association (MICAA) was a commercialized amateur basketball league founded by Dionisio "Chito" Calvo in 1938 that helped shape Philippine basketball for almost 40 years.

Under the control of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), the league started with employees of member companies as players who held jobs within their company during daytime. Eventually, the league turned into more of a semi-professional league with the participation of the best players of the country. In 1975, nine of its teams (Utex, Elizalde Group of Companies, San Miguel Corporation, Concepcion Industries, Seven-Up, Consolidated Foods Corporation, Delta Motors, Crispa and Mariwasa) decided to break away from MICAA because of the stiffling treatment they were getting from the BAP and formed the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the country's first professional basketball league. Ending up as a farm league of sorts of the PBA, MICAA eventually closed down in 1981 after the PBA commenced its own PBA Rookie Draft.

The American’s Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) introduced basketball in the Philippines between 1898 and 1900 within the historic walls of Intramuros, Manila. At that time, soccer was the most popular sport in the country, after having been a Spanish colony for more than three centuries and as influenced by British sailors based in nearby Hong Kong. Nevertheless, basketball, as well as other American sports like baseball, went on to replace soccer.

The early introduction of basketball made the Philippines among the world's first basketball-playing nations and installed the Filipinos among the world's most avid followers of the sport. As such, the Philippine national team dominated Asian basketball and was among the world's best before the estabishment of the Philippine Basketball Association, the world's second oldest (and Asia's first) professional basketball league, in 1975.

The object of the game is to put the ball into your opponent’s goal. This may be done by throwing the ball from any part of the grounds, with one or two hands, under the following conditions and rules.

1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands.

3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowances to be made for a man who catches the ball when running if he tries to stop.

4. The ball must be held by the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it.

5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping or striking in any way the person of an opponent shall be allowed; the first infringement of this rule by any player shall come as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game, no substitute allowed.

6. A foul is striking the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3, 4, and such as described in Rule 5.

7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul).

8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.

9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play by the person touching it. He has a right to hold it unmolested for five seconds. In case of a dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds; if he holds it longer it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game the umpire shall call a foul on that side.

10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.

11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals, with any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.

12. The time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between.

13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner. In the case of a draw, the game may, by agreement of the captains, be continued until another goal is made.
